Pubcast #6: Bananas, Proper, Bald and Sponsors

The Pubcast received an unexpected visitor in the form of a well-known fruit-based superhero during this week’s show, which saw the team look back on their top three favourite goals of all time, discuss the possible selections for an All-Time Bald XI and report back on the rather varied fortunes of their “second” teams.

There’s also some big news regarding the Pubcast itself, as the show (despite not having a sponsor of its own) makes its first foray into the football business by becoming kit sponsors. Yes, really!

Don’t forget you can get in touch with the show via the contact form on the site or via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

It’s all gone nuts at St. Mary’s

The Pubcast’s resident Gooner, Dan Ferdinand, has been spoiled by supporting a club that unites behind its manager. The same couldn’t be said for Southampton Football Club, who dispensed with Alan Pardew’s services last week. Here’s Dan’s personal take on the situation…

Three games into the new season and Southampton have sacked manager Alan Pardew…after he led his side to a 4-0 win!

There are many reasons why this decision is football gone crazy.

What does it say about the management of the club if they have only realised three games into the season that Pardew was the wrong man for the job?

Surely someone on the board has to also be removed.

Personally, I thought Pardew was doing a good job and I can’t see how you can judge a season based on three games of football.

In the Football League the season campaign is 46 games and all teams will have ups and downs. Just look at the Sunderland side that Roy Keane took from a relegation fight to the Championship title and the Millwall team that were top of the Championship table at Christmas but were relegated at the end.

Sometimes I wonder what the people that run football clubs are thinking.

Now if someone puts in their hard earned money to buy a football club and they don’t believe that the football staff are right for the job, remove them. That’s fair enough.

Why not start your ownership with a clean slate, I can understand that, even if I think that manager is good at his job.

But why give a manager all of pre-season then remove him after three games? It smacks of poor management and I feel sorry for the Southampton fans who have loved the club all their lives.

So, where does this leave Southampton?

Well, they have the strongest squad in the league and money to bring in reinforcements in January, but if I was a manager on the market I’m not sure that I’d want this job.

If history has taught us anything, it has proved that clubs that change their manager repeatedly are rarely successful for sustained periods.

I’m not saying you should keep a bad manager but if you have a good one and you believe in him and stick by him, you never know what’s around the next corner. In Pardew, I think Southampton had a good manager.

I still think Hull City were wrong to sack Phil Brown, just as Derby were too quick to dispense with George Burley.

What should I care, I support a club that supports it’s manager. We’ve had success and I believe that we have been successful over the last five seasons without a trophy.

What do you think of the manager merry-go-round?

Are you sick of short-sighted chairmen changing their minds faster than they change their pants?

Get in touch and tell us what you think on e-mail at banter@footballpubcast.co.uk or on twitter.com/footballpubcast.

Farewell to a World Cup legend

Dan Ferdinand bids a fond farewell to a genuine World Cup legend.

Francisco Varallo may not be a well known name on these shores but he was the last surviving player from the first ever World Cup final. Sadly, he died today, at the age of 100.

Varallo played for Argentina in 1930 against Uruguay.

Uruguay won the game 4-2 in the end but Varallo had fond memories of his career.

He told FIFA in an interview, “I achieved a lot of nice things in my career, I represented the national team and was Boca’s record goal scorer.”

That scoring record of 194 goals stood for decades and was only surpassed by Martin Palermo earlier this year.

We hope that every football fan will think about Francisco Varallo today and maybe even look up the first ever World Cup final of 1930.

To Francisco Varallo and all the members for both teams, the Pubcast salutes you!

The Football Pubcast: Now powered by Audioboo!

Last week was a challenging one for the Pubcasters but, as the gaffer Simon Head explains, it finished off with the lads celebrating getting a fantastic new home for the show.

It wasn’t a great week for me to be honest. We’d effectively been served notice by our hosting providers, who informed us that our show had effectively outgrown the hosting account, giving us just five days to remedy the situation. The fact that I only saw the message with three days to go didn’t really help, either!

By the time it got to Friday, things were getting twitchy. With many other sites that I manage set to be adversely affected if we didn’t find a new home for the Pubcast, I’d spent countless hours in the evenings trying to work out the best way to take the show forward. The website could remain where it was, but the podcast files themselves needed to be rehoused elsewhere. But with time running out and the possibility of having to take the Pubcast offline temporarily becoming ever more likely, we got the breakthrough we needed on Friday afternoon.

Thankfully, and brilliantly, the mobile and web platform, Audioboo, who I’d approached earlier in the week, agreed to partner with the show and from that moment all our technical issues were history.

As a result, we are now proudly “Powered by Audioboo” and I couldn’t be happier. Myself and Jim had a good few beers on Friday night to celebrate, let me tell you!

Saturday was spent switching the show across to Audioboo and giving the site a bit of a facelift in the process to reflect Audioboo’s involvement. If you already subscribe to the show, don’t worry, everything should remain exactly the same on iTunes so you can still continue to get the shows as usual. Nothing should change on that front. But what will change is the sort of stuff we’ll be able to do on the show going forward.

We are now on board with one of the most exciting new media companies in the UK, whose product is revolutionising how people use the spoken word on the internet. I have used the platform for a couple of years now, for both work and play, and absolutely love it. Now we have the exciting opportunity to see how well we can utilise their service for our show.

We’re now looking at various ways of harnessing the full power of Audioboo to improve the Pubcast and make it more interactive, while keeping it “grassroots”. The ideas are already flowing and there’s much to consider in the weeks to come.

It should be a fun season.

    Barkingside completes the set

With each of the Pubcast team selecting a “second” team for the season, there was one space remaining due to Dan not being available for the early shows this season. But he did what any self-respecting football fan should do and chose to support his local side.

That side is Barkingside FC, and Dan has already been in touch with the club, who have kindly given us a mention in their matchday programme.

And thanks to Enfield Town website The Cold End, we have been given a first glimpse of Barkingside in action.

Unfortunately, “Side” lost out to Stansted in their Essex Senior League Cup Group E match last Monday, but with another group match in the same competition coming up next Saturday against Buckingham Athletic, the team will have the perfect opportunity to bounce back.

Dan will keep us updated with his new team’s progress on the Football Pubcast throughout the season and hopefully we’ll be able to pay a visit to the Oakside Stadium to watch them in action at some point this season.

The Football Pubcast and Football Barbie – the perfect team!

It’s not every day that a beautiful blonde woman offers to buy you a drink (not in our case, anyway!), but that’s exactly what’s happened to one of the Pubcasters on this week’s show.

On The Football Pubcast this week we were lucky enough to have Real Madrid TV’s Kay Murray join us to share her thoughts ahead of the Mallorca v Real Madrid match this weekend.

Middlesbrough fan Kay works over in Spain as a presenter and reporter on Real Madrid’s TV channel, following the team throughout the season, interviewing the players and bringing fans the latest inside news from the Estadio Santiago Bernebeu.

The Mallorca v Real Madrid match, which is televised live on Sky Sports on Sunday night (8pm, Sky Sports 1 and HD1) was picked as our feature match of the week and Kay gave us the full SP ahead of the La Liga encounter.

She even joined in with the banter and promised to share a “Shark Bucket” with our Stu if her prediction of a 3-1 Real win proves to be a successful one.

Suffice to say Stu also picked a 3-1 win for Real Madrid and will be cheering on Los Blancos with more gusto than usual this weekend!

She even gave us a plug on her hugely popular Football Barbie blog:

You can follow Kay, AKA Football Barbie, on her blog by clicking here

And check her out on Twitter @FootballBarbie1

Pubcast #5: Goals, Bonkers, Obvious and Shark Bucket

On a packed – and lively – show this week we look back on the weekend’s action and complete our list of Premier League signing suggestions.

We’ll also update you on our second teams and offer our predictions for the featured match of the week, Mallorca v Real Madrid, including a guest prediction from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about (yes, really!). That’ll make a change!

Don’t forget you can get in touch with the show via the contact form on the site or via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
