A love letter to Landon Donovan

The Pubcast’s resident Evertonian, Simon Pitney, sent us this love letter to his favourite American player, LA Galaxy’s own former Everton loanee, Landon Donovan.

    Dear Landon,

Please spurn all other offers and promises of gold and re-join Everton football club.

There, I have said it, and whats more I don’t care who knows that I am on my metaphorical knees begging. Players such as yourself are a rare commodity in football. Whilst it becomes ever more tricky to avoid falling into a massive “sweeping statements” trap, I will edge forward and proclaim that football in general could do with more US stars in its upper echelons.

Our game has been blessed by not only yourself, but by Clint Dempsey (AKA Deuce – see Pubcast TV for a clip), Brad Friedal, Tim Howard and Jay DeMerit to name a few. No longer with us but fondly remembered are Carlos Bocanegra and Brian McBride, and Michael Bradley has been building a solid reputation for himself on the continent. The one thing that stands out about all of these players is their professionalism. I cant remember ever hearing of an American player complaining about being rotated, or left out. I dont remember seeing an American footballer being “papped” with a hairdresser who has it all hanging out either.

Not for them, the ostentatious badge kissing one minute and transfer request the next – almost to a man they have been loyal, hard working and the ultimate team player. A player not mentioned above was Joe Max Moore – who had a brief spell with Everton, and although he wasnt the most gifted of players – we parted ways with a genuine affection of how much he bought into, and contributed to, the team dynamic.

Even in the most over the top and parochial of American sports – the one you call football – “team” is the ultimate concept. Sure you have guys holding out for more money and being showmen but in every interview about every situation its always about the guy next to you, and the man above you. Perhaps the unique “draft” nature of some American sports leads to this sense of loyalty and professionalism. This year Sam Bradford was drafted at the number 1 pick to the St Louis Rams – a team so deficient that it will take years for them to post a winning season – let alone challenge for the play-offs. I would wager that Sam Bradford is happy with this – its the challenge of the thing, the chance to build something – he certainly wont be bemoaning his luck or causing any rifts in the dressing room.

Its the same focus and dedication that your “soccer” players display as well. Very few of the players listed above will have been guaranteed starters throughout their careers – Friedal at Liverpool, Howard at Manchester United and McBride at Everton for example. You yourself Landon, suffered some setbacks – the Leverkusen deal didnt go to plan and Bayern Munich didnt appreciate your talents fully either. Yet you have come back to become the all time leading goal scorer for your country amongst numerous accolades (3 MLS Cups, US All time assists leader, 6 time Honda Player of the year to name a few).

You had a sparkling world cup, building on your earlier success (Donovan was named young player of the tournament by FIFA in 2002) in the worlds biggest tournament. You scored the last minute winner against Algeria, meaning your country finished top of a group for the first time since 1930. You were the eye-catching talent in a team that performed admirably in it’s four games. Coupled with your loan spell last season at Everton where you were an unqualified success (winning a player of the month accolade in your short stay) this meant that many other clubs have looked at you.

Now I am, of course, somewhat biased, but I repeat my plea from earlier – please re-join Everton. You brought with you an enthusiasm that can, in every day encounters with Americans, be somewhat overpowering, but in our sports stars is the epitome of what we want to see. Everton are not a club that will play Barcelona style football, we are workers, we will out-run, out-tackle and ultimately out-fight our rivals – we are ALL about the team spirit. Thats the one ingredient that helps us “punch above our weight” as pundits put it, year in year out. David Moyes displays many of the traits that you have displayed yourself – humbleness, determination, ambition and no little skill. Your loyalty to Everton would be repaid by the manager – not for us a quick fix £24 million signing just because you have temprarily lost form.

Not for us a bulging squad that could see many a players career disappear in reserve team football. Everton are on the cusp of achieving something and it’s so very rare that you see a perfect match up of player and club. From where I sit this couldnt be a happier marriage – you are 28 – at the peak of your footballing prowess, with many temptations and decisions to make. For what it’s worth I would have you back in a shot, and I think most of the Goodison faithful would feel the same.

    Yours sincerely,

    Simon Pitney

We must be doing something right. We’ve had our first critic!

The Football Pubcast’s anchorman Simon Head blogs about the attention the show is receiving, good and bad.

We’re having great fun with the Pubcast, and are genuinely surprised and grateful that so many people, from so many countries, are listening.

But as more people start finding out about the show, there will inevitably be some that won’t like it. That’s OK. But sometimes you encounter people who enjoy having a pop.

One such part-time ‘critic’ described our efforts as “amateur”. I think they missed the point.

We ARE amateur. And yes, it sounds it, too. But that’s part of the show. We aren’t the BBC. We don’t have a budget, a producer or a recording studio. It’s a pubcast, we record in a pub, with no technical gear whatsoever. If you’re listening to us for in-depth analysis, then you’ll be disappointed. If you want dry, serious, considered, football discussion, then you’re in the wrong place. I listen to stuff like that, sure, and there’s plenty of it out there to choose from. That’s why we AREN’T doing the same.

As well as the dry stuff, I also enjoy the more light-hearted football shows too.

In the process of slagging off our show, the commenter also had a pop at The Football Ramble, and in doing so actually rendered everything they’d said virtually redundant in my eyes.

The Ramble is, for my money, by far and away the best independent football podcast on the net and I’ve been listening to their show right from the very beginning when they launched as a MySpace page. Since then their popularity has rocketed, their show format has improved year on year and they’re now firmly entrenched in the iTunes Top Ten, often in the top spot. So clearly it ain’t that bad.

Apparently we’re worse. That suits me. We are! But if we’re even in the same ballpark as the Ramble, then that would mean we’re doing bloody well.

The Football Pubcast isn’t meant to be serious, or professional. It is what it is – five lads, in a pub, talking football and having a bit of fun doing it. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea (what is?) but hopefully a few people will enjoy it.

    That’ll do for us.

Roy Hodgson – what a pro!

We love Roy Hodgson. He’s one of football’s nice guys, he’s done the business with Fulham and now he’s got a well-deserved shot at the big time as manager of Liverpool. If anyone can revive the Anfield club’s fortunes, it’s him.

As well as being a great manager, he also has a reputation for being a really nice bloke and, as this little clip from Liverpool’s recent press conference shows, he’s got a sense of humour, too.

    Robbie’s got a feelin’

Here at The Football Pubcast we’re huge fans of Robbie Savage. He’s a great pundit and he’s still a pretty handy player, too. And best of all, he likes a bit of banter and doesn’t take himself too seriously.

So we had to show you this vid, featuring Sav on his way to a Derby match, warming up with a bit of singing to the Black Eyed Peas.

Peterhead boosted by new midfield signing

With Peterhead looking to kick-start their season, the club was handed a welcome boost with the news that former Aberdeen midfielder Nicky Clark, who had spent a loan spell with Peterhead last season, has signed a deal to keep him at Balmoor until the New Year.

Clark, who made 23 appearances for the side last year, will provide manager Neale Cooper with additional options in midfield areas, and believes that the Aberdeenshire club can bounce back after a poor start to the campaign.

“It wasn’t the best of starts, but I’m sure the boys will pull together and we can start winning,” he explained.

“The next couple of games are exceptionally difficult, but there’s no reason why we can’t win them.”

Check out the video interviews with Nicky and manager Neale Cooper below. Video kindly provided by Blue Toon TV

Blue Toon looking to bounce back

Headley reports on the latest developments at Balmoor as Peterhead look to bounce back after a disappointing start to their league season.

The Pubcasters’ second teams have suffered mixed fortunes in the opening couple of weeks of the season, and in the case of my team – Peterhead – it’s been something of a sluggish start.

The Blue Toon have looked superb in the cup games they’ve played so far, but in the league, it’s been a different story. Two defeats, to Stenhousemuir and Forfar, have given the opposition a head-start. Indeed, manager Neale Cooper sounded at his wit’s end after last weekend’s defeat.

But a new week brings a new opportunity to put things right, and in his midweek update for Blue Toon TV (who have kindly agreed to provide the Pubcast with regular Peterhead audio and video throughout the season) Cooper is looking positive and praising the character of his players ahead of their next test in the league.

Peterhead’s next match is against East Fife at New Bayview, this Saturday, August 21. We’ll bring you an update on how they got on in the next edition of The Football Pubcast.

Clint Dempsey: Midfield dynamo and hip-hop artist

Fulham’s star midfielder, USA international Clint Dempsey, is known for his box-to-box energy and crucial goals.

He scored a sublime chip against Juventus in the Europa League last season, and was also the man whose shot embarrassed Rob Green at the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

So why’s he on Pubcast TV? Well, as well as his phenomenal goal against Juve, there’s another interesting video where Clint shows off his rapping skills.

    Check it out…

And here’s that wonder goal against Juve…
