Barkingside trip up on league return

BARKINGSIDE 2-5 ENFIELD 1893
ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE
SATURDAY 27TH NOVEMBER 2010

After the excellent quarter final win in midweek against Bethnal Green, Barkingside came down to earth with a bang.

Barkingside started well and a corner on 8 minutes found Perry Burns unmarked and he headed the corner down and Reece Cosson scored to give Barkingside a 1-0 lead.

From the restart and on 9 minutes Barkingside were caught napping and Enfield’s long thrown into the box went unchallenged and Williamson for Enfield scored to make it 1-1.

Barkinside’s defence who played so well in midweek looked nervous and were caught out again on 19 minutes when they chipped a ball over Luke Dodds Barkingside’ s keeper and looked to have scored. Martyn Stokes was unable to head the ball and unbelievabably punched it over the bar.

The referee awarded Enfield a penalty and showed the Red Card to Stokes to reduce Barkingside to 10 men. Luke Dodd saved the penalty to keep the scores at 1-1.

Enfield were dominant in their play and it was no surprise when Hughes scored on 29 minutes to make it 2-1.

In the second half Barkingside defended time and time again as Enfield took advantage of the extra player.

On 50 minutes Enfield made it 3-1 when Williamson scored again and on 73 minutes Borghys scored and increased their lead to 4-1.

Barkingside tried to get back in the game but Enfield defended well.

On 88 minutes Dean Nyman scored for Barkingside to make it 4-2 and straight from the restart Enfield finished the game as on 89 minutes Lopas scored to make it 5-2.

A club spokeperson said after the game: “A disappointing display today from the team especially after Midweeks Quarter Final win against Bethnal Green.

“When you are reduced to 10 men especially as it was so early in the game it was a uphill battle.”
