It’s like they’ve won the FA Cup

On this week’s show I mentioned the recent Nottingham Forest v Notts County game, with particular reference to Wes Morgan’s stoppage time equaliser. After promising to find a clip for the site, I found all the YouTube entries to show about as much quality as a Paul Scholes tackle. So my search looked destined for a fruitless conclusion. Until I found this little beauty.

Recorded from the away end, it’s obviously a County fan looking to capture the celebrations at the final whistle. What he unintentionally films is the quite sublime last minute piledriver from Wes Morgan – and the subsequent reaction within the City Ground.

Fast forward to 44 seconds for the goal. An instant comment of “It’s like they’ve won the FA Cup!” follows and it illustrates something all football fans can relate to. It’s the horrible feeling of conceding an important goal and the need to offset the pain, by whatever means, that engulfs us. The most common method is a chant of “You only sing when you’re winning” which is surely the most depressing song in any football crowd’s repertoire. You know if you’re singing it, you’re losing. Not good.

This guy has gone for a similar and more instant tactic. Nottingham Forest fans are dismissive of their rivalry with their City neighbours so surely a goal – even a thumping last minute extra time strike from a centre half – against County would not be too big a deal? Evidently not. You can see what he’s getting at, but you can also hear from his voice he’s hurting.

It’s a clip which sums up football from the away end. Ecstasy on the other three sides of the ground and complete desolation in the other. No noise, just hands on head and having to contemplate the events that have just conspired against your team. We’ve all been there…
