Skills to pay the (substantial) bills…

It’s nice to see that you’re old heros have still got it. A week or so ago, my old hero Dougie Freedman strapped his boots on again to star for Crystal Palace in a 10 minute cameo against Dulwich Hamlet. He hit the post and set up our third goal. Brought back some very happy memories.

At megarich Man City, they’ve got a couple of former heroes whose talent has clearly never left them. A few days back, we tweeted this goal scored by David Platt in a training session:

An absolute peach – and the look on Aguero’s face after is priceless. Ealier in the same session, Roberto Mancini showed us why he was once Italian footballer of the year with a nice little flicked volleyed pass.

However, it’s not just the old guard at Man City who can show off. Not to be outdone, Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko team up for this little piece of showboating.

Brilliant stuff from the boys in blue. All of which also gives us an excuse to show this video from a few years back… Mark Hughes, we salute you.

The Platt over-head kick was amazing. The way he got straight back up and into the game was great as well.

    Own goal of the season?

Good news! Football is still happening, somewhere in the world! And that means footballers are still doing stupid things, like scoring 30 yard own goals.

Evgen Eleev – take a bow, son.

Slow ticket sales? Film some girls with their kit off!

Have a gander at Crystal Palace’s latest marketing strategy – if you can’t flog season tickets on the back of sexy football, get your cheerleaders to strut about in red and blue bikinis lip-synching along to some pop tune! Enjoy fellas…

Not the first time a club has used used sexy ladies to boost their poor season ticket uptake. Below is a frankly bizarre effort from Madrid-based La Liga club Getafe, whose premise is that by releasing a niche lesbian porno entitled Hot Zombies from Getafe, they could harvest their supporters’ love-gravy and create a race of Getafe supporting super-fans. Yeah, me neither. Just enjoy the pretty ladies.

Phil Brown calls Andrea Pirlo a homophobe

And the most bizarre statement of the past year goes to… Phil Brown. According to the perma-tanned, erstwhile Hull City & Preston manager, Andrea Pirlo has never played in the Premiership because he hates gay people. Nope, no idea either.

I’d have to say that’s just mangling the language, I think he meant he doesn’t want to leave his country. It’s a badly worded statement but not too surprising given the source.

You’re completely right Paul, that’s exactly what he meant! Still fantastic/unbelievable that he thought home-o-phobic meant the fear of leaving your home/country!

    Jogo Brawlito

A professional foul in a Brazilian second tier game leads to a full on, 10 minute war involving every member of both teams, plus the subs. It’s pretty vicious stuff, but I particularly enjoyed a couple of chest high air shot karate kicks, like a a comedy Dutch tribute act combining Nigel de Jong in the World Cup final and Robin van Persie versus Denmark. Take a look below…

Unsurprisingly, the referee showed 12 red cards and the game was abandoned.

    Clamping the Bus

I’ve heard of parking the bus, but this Dutch fan takes things one step further. In the build up to their Group B grudge match against Germany, he decides to slip under a security fence and place a big orange wheel clamp on the German team bus – and gets a chase from an angry security guard for his troubles.

These are the kind of underhand tactics Mark Van Bommel would be proud of.
